Farmers Market 1/17/13

January 17, 2013 by Elisabeth Norris Leave a Comment

Another week of January is gone and another trip to the market is done. I probably shouldn’t have bought more fruit as I think I still have enough to get through another week. But I want to experiment more this year with all the citrus. Specifically blood oranges. They may not be as sweet as say the cara cara’s but their color gets me every time. I also learned that the satsumas I bought last week were not satsumas at all. I think all the small guys last week were actually little tangerines. I actually don’t think I have bought a single satsuma this season. What I am slowly gathering is that they are one of the several different types of mandarins (all of which are on the small side and easy to peel.) Google turned up a blog post with an incredible diagram that puts the different types of oranges into perspective.

Mandarins (I think) on the left and blood oranges on the right.

Citrus

Veggies for the week

  • Red & golden beets
  • Lacinato kale
  • Broccoli
  • Russet potatoes
  • Red bell pepper
  • Carrots

Farmers Market 4/26/12

Creature of habit I am. What is more interesting about this post is that I took these pictures with a 24mm manual focus lens! I didn’t have to stand high above on a step stool to get everything in frame as I do when I use the 50mm. A friend is letting me borrow it to see if it is one I’d like to have in my arsenal.

  • Romanesco
  • Butter lettuce
  • Artichokes
  • Leeks
  • Kale
  • Russet potatoes
  • Avocado
  • Tomatoes

  • Tangerines
  • Mandarins

Well Satsumas are officially on their way out. My citrus lady doesn’t have anymore for the season. I’m not quite ready to give them up so I bought a few from another farmer.
