I managed to forge the wet and foggy weather this morning and made it to the market. Had a small haul of veggies today because of our trip to Tennessee and North Carolina next week. Most of the veggies I picked up today are for some vegetable stock for a winter minestrone soup (in addition to what is already on hand) I have planned for some friends this Saturday.
- Zucchini
- Yellow onions
- Avocado
- Kale
- An heirloom variety of carrots
- Celery
I knew the avocado I purchased wasn’t of the Hass variety so a quick google search lead me to the 7 major variety of California avocados. I had no idea there were that many different varieties. Kind of interesting that the one I picked up is the “bacon” variety. I wonder if it is meant to go on BLT’s?
I’m starting to see more heirloom variety of carrots at the market too. Going to have to make a note to later research the different varieties so I know what I am buying.
Fruit can be so reflective some times! So instead of a good picture, you get a real picture. Me sitting on the kitchen floor, fighting the lighting, and Firefly sticking his nose into things.
This week these blood oranges have a specific purpose… Deb’s blood orange olive oil cake w/blood orange compote. Also for our guests this weekend. I am incredibly looking forward to making this cake both in that this is my first try of an olive oil cake and that I think it will be a great highlight of this striking winter orange.
Because it was such a small haul and we need some life amongst the storms we are having.
